You are in that age range. Between 23-28. Maybe even smack in the middle at 25. This is the when the start of the quarter-life crisis sets in, where you wonder am I doing enough with my life and where’d all my friends go? Most are either going down the aisle in wedding marches or in line at the local club still dancing till 4am. And you are either at home with a good book or movie, just being. How do you deal?
Are you having feelings of why not me? Why am I not married yet? Or should I be having kids? Do I even want kids? Or has the club scene just not been your scene anymore for a few months? Contentment isn’t found dancing around for hours on end, then getting as wasted as possible and waking up hungover next to Johnny somebody.
You may at this point have a job, but you are still waiting for it to turn into a career you can call steady and secure. Or you may be currently single, out of a long relationship, or a long string of relationships and just got another baby shower invite. Or you may just be in a relationship but you aren’t at the stage you want to be yet.
The important thing about a quarter-life crisis is, it’s not the end. You can’t compare your now to someone else’s. And the advice I give myself is I am not there yet. Yet is my marker. Yet means there’s still time for progress and for me to get there. Even if you need time to figure out where there is. It’s okay to change and grow out of wanting to party 24/7 and maybe eventually settle down. And just because everyone else around you is settling down and starting families, doesn’t mean you are in that stage of your life yet. Make sure the person you settle down with is the one you wish to spend forever with. Because you don’t want to settle when you settle down.
The best way to get through this is to know it’s okay. If you feel depressed or if you’re not where you thought you’d be by this time, that’s okay. You will find your way, but also if your friends are changing, maybe new hobbies and activities would be a good way to meet new friends and also stay active so you don’t get down.
